Dean, College of Honors
The University of Toledo

Thomas E. Barden, dean of the College of Honors and professor of English at The University of Toledo, has been selected as the 2012-2014 Phi Kappa Phi Scholar by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for his achievements in research, teaching, service and leadership.

Barden will be presented with the award on August 11 at a lunch in his honor during the Society’s biennial convention in St. Louis, Mo.

“Dr. Barden combines a love of learning with a love of teaching that crosses traditional disciplinary lines,” said John C. O'Quinn, chair of the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar selection committee. “In addition to tremendous scholarship in the areas of American folklore, the oral tradition, and John Steinbeck, he has helped create interdisciplinary programs and fostered the careers of hundreds of students as the head of his University’s Honors College,” said O’Quinn.

Barden has served as director/dean of University of Toledo’s Honors College since 2006 and as general editor of the University of Toledo Press since 2004. He has authored six books, numerous articles, and presented papers primarily in the areas of folklore, the oral tradition, and John Steinbeck studies. During his career at UT, he has received both the university-wide Outstanding Teaching Award and the Outstanding Faculty Research Award for his book Virginia Folk Legends, which was also selected by the American Folklore Society for inclusion in its American folklore classics series. Most recently, he was presented the 2010 Edith Rathbun Award for Community Outreach and Engagement.

A former Fulbright Fellow, Barden earned B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in English from University of Virginia.

First presented in 1974, the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research and public service. The award is given once every two years. Recipients receive a $1,000 honorarium and a trip to present at the Society’s biennial convention.
