Phi Kappa Phi is proud to feature 2025 Fellow, Aylar Atadurdyyeva. Atadurdyyeva is pursuing a degree in global and international studies and microbiology at The University of Kansas, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and geopolitics of Eurasia.
Atadurdyyeva’s love for learning began in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where she discovered a set of encyclopedias on natural phenomena. Encouraged by her mother, who was denied higher education due to societal constraints, Atadurdyyeva moved to the United States to pursue her education.
Atadurdyyeva mentors young girls from Turkmenistan, guiding first-generation college students from low-income families through the American education system. Inspired by faculty at KU , she realized her potential to pursue a Ph.D. and contribute to academia.
Her studies focus on the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance, a crisis exacerbated by antibiotic misuse. She believes that addressing this issue requires both scientific advancements and effective policymaking. By integrating microbiology with political science, she aims to develop solutions for Central Asia and Eurasia.
Atadurdyyeva said, “As a first-generation college student, I am excited about the opportunity to pursue graduate education. This Fellowship is a testament to the hard work that I and my village of support have put in. It serves as a powerful reminder to keep going, even when challenges arise, and that with dedication and passion, first-generation students from halfway across the world can pursue a meaningful career.”
