Phi Kappa Phi is proud to feature 2024 Sherrill Carlson Fellow, Delaney Carey. Carey is pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology, focusing on working with justice-involved youth.

Carey earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology, with a minor in forensic psychology, from Marymount University. During her time at Marymount, she participated in the Marymount Honors program, where she completed a thesis exploring factors that influence public perceptions of juvenile justice. She also served as student representative for the Honors program for two years and president in her senior year, where she organized educational, social, and service events. One of her notable achievements was reaching record attendance for an event where students wrote encouraging notes and donated hygiene items for people re-entering society after incarceration.

Carey’s research endeavors included co-authoring a study on mother-infant interactions, which was published in Infant Behavior and Development. She also completed a Senior Capstone project critically analyzing capital punishment and a research methodology project examining biases in sentencing attitudes. Her honors thesis involved developing and distributing a nationwide survey to gauge public opinion on juvenile justice issues, analyzing the results to promote policy reformation in the field.

Carey's work as a care coordinator for recently paroled individuals with severe mental illness in Michigan solidified her desire to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology, focusing on early intervention for at-risk youth. As she embarks on this journey, Carey says, “My love of learning will carry me through the pursuit of this endeavor, and I will carry my clients with me as I move towards my goals.”
