Up for Discussion: A Change of Habit

As we prepare the winter 2026 edition of the Phi Kappa Phi Forum, we're asking members to contribute their ideas to the theme. We enjoy reading your responses and will be choosing a sample to share in the magazine.

Forum’s winter 2026 issue will explore the theme “A Change of Habit,” and we want to hear from you about a habit you've kicked or one you've started that has been a game-changer for you. Have you ever dropped a bad habit or adopted a good one that changed your life for the better? How did that change shape you?

Danny Heitman, Forum editor, recalls one habit that put his life on a different path. In his early years of high school, he complained to his mother that no one ever bothered to say hello to him. She suggested that he greet everyone first because they might be waiting for him to start. Reluctantly, he adopted that habit, and people quickly opened up. Before long, he had a new circle of friends and learned a pivotal lesson about building community: You have to lead in building the kind of world you want. Do you have a change of habit, whether dropping a bad one or starting a good one, that has changed you? Share your thoughts, and let's get a discussion going.

Share your response to our question by replying to this discussion in our online member community Link. Responses of no more than three or four sentences are recommended, and we look forward to reading your contributions. We will publish some of your answers in the “Up for Discussion” feature of our winter magazine.
