The Award

The Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award and Phi Kappa Phi Artist Award honor those individuals who demonstrate the ideals of the Society through their activities, achievements, and scholarship. Each award is given once per biennium.

First presented in 1974, the Scholar Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research, and public service. In 1983, the Artist Award was established to recognize the achievements of those who, in addition to their outstanding scholarship, have displayed talents in the broad realm of the arts–creative, graphic, performing, visual, and/or fine arts.

The Scholar Award recognizes professional excellence over the course of an academic career. The Artist Award recognizes professional excellence over the course of an artist's career. To that end, students are not eligible for these awards.

  • The nominee must have been initiated by February 1, 2015.
  • The nominee need not be affiliated with an academic institution.
  • The nominee must be an active member with current dues paid as of February 1, 2020.
  • The nominee cannot be a sitting Phi Kappa Phi board member, regional vice president, member of the Scholar & Artist Award committee or Society employee.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria includes:

  1. Distinguished record of past accomplishments (at least six years of substantive service).
  2. Documented evidence of national or international prominence and visibility.
  3. Demonstrated consistency of excellence in teaching and/or service or the arts.
  4. Scholars have distinguished record of honors, publications, patents, inventions or other types of recognition for excellence and scholarly achievement. Artists are acknowledged by peers in the field through national and international awards or other means of recognition.
