Member Spotlight - Tanisha Joshi

Tanisha Joshi is originally from India and grew up in the scenic town of Nainital in Uttarakhand. She is currently a graduate student at the Clinton School of Public Service, pursuing a Master of Public Service after earning a Master’s degree in Physics.

Tanisha is actively engaged in volunteer work on campus and in the community. She currently volunteers with the Clinton Presidential Center, contributing her time and skills to support the center’s initiatives.

What inspired you to pursue a master’s degree in public service?
I wanted to combine my analytical skills with a passion for creating tangible social impact.

What’s one lesson your program has taught you that you think everyone should know?
Listening with curiosity is often more powerful than speaking with authority.

If you could lead one community project anywhere in the world, what would it focus on?
Building sustainable water access solutions for underserved communities.

What’s one thing you miss most about India?
The vibrant street food and bustling local markets.

What are some common stereotypes or misconceptions Americans have about India that you’d like to clarify?
India is not just about tradition or poverty; it’s also a hub of innovation, diversity, and creativity.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
It’s a recognition of both achievement and the responsibility to contribute meaningfully to society.

What is one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?
I may seem serious and quiet at first, but once people get to know me, they find I’m actually a hidden comedian. I love making people laugh and bringing lightness to any situation. I’m a cool, chill person who enjoys connecting with others who share my vibe.

What is your favorite thing about your hometown, whether it’s in India or the U.S.?
Nainital is the city of lakes, with misty mountains, tranquil waters, and a community that makes every corner feel like home. I love Nainital’s mix of natural beauty, vibrant markets, and the peaceful pace of lake life. Nainital’s lakes and surrounding hills create a serene escape, yet the town’s culture and festivals keep it lively and warm.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Reading, hiking, and exploring places.

What is your favorite book?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

What is your favorite holiday, and why is it your favorite?
Diwali, because it celebrates light, hope, and family togetherness.
