Need a Good Summer Read? We’ve Got You Covered

Summer is upon us and it’s time to sit back, relax, and find a good book to read. Whether you’re curled up on the couch or lounging by the pool – and whether you’re reading for school, work or pleasure – there’s nothing quite like sinking into a great, page-turner.

In this thread in Phi Kappa Phi’s exclusive community Link, members are sharing what’s got them hooked these days and what their plans are for the next item on their “To Be Read” list.

Michael Wilson (Texas Tech University) is working on research for a Texas history podcast. “My current readings are focused on that subject. The first is Spanish Texas 1915-1821 by Donald E. Chipman, and the second is Peace Came in the Form of a Woman:  Indians and Spaniards in the Texas Borderlands by Juliana Barr,” he shared. “Actual history is so much more fascinating than dramatic licensed history.”

Richard Doubleday (Louisiana State University) has his reading plans lined up. “I am reading two books this summer. They are The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker and The Story of the Stone by Cao Xueqin,” said Doubleday. Becker’s book won a Pulitzer Prize, and “The Story of the Stone is one of the great novels of Chinese literature,” he noted.

Catherine Coates (Old Dominion University) shared her list, as well. “So far in 2020 I've finished reading The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden, The Wild Woman's Ways by Michaela Moehm, and Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett. I'm currently reading Small Gods by Terry Pratchett, Girl Talk by Jacqueline Mroz, and many journal articles about climate change, social media, and corporate social responsibility for a research project I'm working on.” She added, “Looking forward to reading everyone's recommendations!”
