Chapter Events

Mother & Daughters of Phi Kappa PhiThe chapter at Jackson State University (188) held its initiation ceremony on March 27 and inducted 62 student members and six faculty members. Chapter officers were on hand to welcome the new members, including Dr. Ingrad Smith, President; Dr. Shirley Burnett, Vice President; and Dr. Helen Crump, Secretary/Treasurer. Two of the new members, were also elected to serve as the chapter’s new student vice presidents—Briana Jefferson and Landrie Tchakoua.

The initiation ceremony also marked another special occasion—a legacy of membership in one family! Clauditte Tchakoua, inducted in 2013, is the mother of three members of this chapter. She is pursuing a Master of Arts in English and a Master of Science in teaching and math education. Her twin daughters, Astride Tchakoua and Ingrid Tchakoua, were inducted in 2018. This year’s newly inducted member and student vice president, Landrie Tchakoua, continues the family tradition of achievement and excellence. All three of the sisters are pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering. Congratulations to them and to all of the newest members of chapter 188!

VA tech Switzerland initiates

In other initiation news, Virginia Tech (025), in addition to their initiation held on their main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, initiated students in the Presidential Global Scholars program in Virginia Tech's Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, study abroad location as well. The chapter thanks Phi Kappa Phi member and Virginia Tech faculty, Paul Heilker, for making this possible.

Murray State University started a “Scholars Week” a number of years ago and their chapter (302) participates to showcase the research and other creative things Phi Kappa Phi members are doing on their campus. This is a very popular and visible event on campus, and in addition to this, the Murray State chapter also has their induction during Scholars Week to underscore the connection.

Creative approaches like these make every chapter unique, and we thank the chapters that sent these stories to us!
