How did you become involved as a chapter officer? I was nominated by our Chapter President.
What has your chapter done that has made you proud? Our chapter has been working very hard the past few years to increase our visibility and engagement with both our faculty and students. We created a dedicated Google page for the chapter which our members are invited to join. We post various news announcements and updates on this page to help engage our members. The university also has a webpage dedicated to Phi Kappa Phi. This is a great resource for faculty and staff as they advise students and is easy for students to find.
Our chapter provides two scholarships each year. The scholarships are awarded in the spring and help pay for tuition in the following fall semester. Our chapter recognizes an applicant’s promise of success in graduate or professional studies as shown by academic and personal achievement, career and educational goals, and related experiences.
In addition, this will be our second year holding the Phi Kappa Phi book drive. Our first year was very successful with many donations from students and faculty. Therefore, we have decided to continue this tradition. It is a great way for our members to remain involved in the chapter as well as for our chapter to give back to the community.
What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you? Phi Kappa Phi signifies a love of learning and service to others. I come from a family of educators, so I think these values were instilled in me at an early age. I can certainly identify with the mission of Phi Kappa Phi, and I enjoy volunteering for an organization that practices these values.
What do you enjoy most about being a chapter officer? As a chapter officer, I enjoy coordinating our Phi Kappa Phi induction ceremony that we hold each year. It is such a joy to see the happiness on students’ faces as they celebrate their outstanding scholastic achievements by being inducted into this prestigious honor society. It is a wonderful evening in which students are able to celebrate their accomplishment with their family and friends as well as the chapter officers.
What advice would you give to a new chapter officer? Having one officer attend the convention each biennium is a great way to network with others who are committed to the Society as well as learn about new information to bring back to chapter members and officers.
