Tianxi Wen, of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas chapter, combines resilience, artistic leadership and a passion for cultural connection throughout her academic and professional journey. Originally from Sichuan, China, Wen grew up there before pursuing advanced studies in music and conducting.

Wen earned a Bachelor of Arts with double majors in yangqin performance and vocal performance from Sichuan Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music in instrumental conducting from Indiana State University and a Doctor of Musical Arts in orchestral conducting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Currently, Wen is completing her Optional Practical Training at UNLV, where she serves as an instructor in the School of Music, an arts coordinator in the College of Fine Arts, and project director of the UNLV World Music Chamber Ensemble.

Wen’s interest in orchestral conducting grew from her background in traditional Chinese music. As a conductor, she enjoys bringing together musicians, artistic traditions and ideas while creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to collaborate and learn from one another.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Wen founded the UNLV World Music Chamber Ensemble and has volunteered her time to lead the ensemble throughout its first three years. One of her most meaningful projects has been the ensemble’s annual Lunar New Year Concert, which brings together music, movement and cross-cultural dialogue for the Las Vegas community.

When asked to describe herself in one word, Wen chose “resilient.”

Being initiated into Phi Kappa Phi was also meaningful for Wen. As a musician and scholar, she says the honor reminded her that artistic and academic achievements do not have to exist separately.

Looking ahead, Wen hopes to establish a nonprofit performing arts organization dedicated to cross-cultural artistic collaboration and community engagement.

Wen’s journey reflects resilience, artistic leadership and a commitment to building connections through music and culture.
