At the spring Phi Kappa Phi induction ceremony at Eastern Kentucky University, a meaningful moment unfolded as mother and daughter Julie George and Dorothy Claire George were welcomed into the prestigious honor society together. Julie, dean of libraries at EKU, and Dorothy Claire, an Honors Program student double-majoring in biomedical sciences and Spanish with hopes of becoming a pediatric dentist, marked the occasion as a proud family milestone.
Julie had long participated in Phi Kappa Phi inductions as dean but had never been inducted herself, a fact her colleagues often joked about, assuming she was already a member. When her time finally came, both she and Dorothy Claire were surprised to learn they would be inducted together. For Dorothy Claire, who admired the society’s values since childhood, the joint induction added special meaning. “I’ve always been drawn to Phi Kappa Phi’s values — academic excellence, interdisciplinary connection and meaningful service — which made it something I knew I wanted to be part of,” she said. Knowing her father was also a Phi Kappa Phi member made the moment even more meaningful, creating a three-member family legacy within the society.
Julie and Dorothy Claire share a close bond built on family traditions such as Girl Scouts and a love of Broadway musicals. Julie admires her daughter’s determination and compassion for others, while Dorothy Claire looks up to her mother’s leadership. “Her success as a woman leader in higher education inspires me and many others,” she said. “She’s truly deserving of every honor, she’s my Wonder Woman.”
Being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi — the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society — is a significant milestone for any student or professional. For Julie and Dorothy Claire, sharing that moment at a university central to their family made it unforgettable.
“Being inducted alongside my mom at the same university where my dad was honored years ago made the moment feel even more full circle and meaningful,” Dorothy Claire said.
As members of Phi Kappa Phi, Julie and Dorothy Claire now join a community that values scholarship, service and integrity, principles they have both demonstrated throughout their lives and now officially do so side by side.
Phi Kappa Phi is honored to welcome Julie George and Dorothy Claire George as official members, celebrating their shared commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.
