From the Executive Director - Summer: A Time of Discovery

It’s my pleasure to connect with you in this second issue of the year for Forum, appropriately devoted to the theme of summer.

I hope that all of our members will find some days to embrace the season’s spirit of respite and fun. Like so many others, I’m looking forward to a little downtime with friends and family, too.

But as I’m frequently reminded in my job at Phi Kappa Phi’s national office, summer can also be a period of fresh engagement and discovery for those we serve. Many of our scholars leave their home campuses over the summer to conduct research around the globe. Whether they’re learning about a new culture, probing the mysteries of ecology, or pioneering cures for disease, Phi Kappa Phi’s members are expanding the frontiers of knowledge. In ways large and small, even in what’s frequently celebrated as the carefree days of summer, our community of scholars is advancing Phi Kappa Phi’s motto, “Let the love of learning rule humanity.”

Where learning unfolds, scholars around the world find a strong partner in Phi Kappa Phi. Each year, thanks to the generous support of our donors, the Society awards $1.3 million in grants and awards to promote scholarship and research in many fields. As a multidisciplinary honor society, we’re committed to the idea that increasing any area of knowledge can help spark discoveries in other areas, too.

That unity of purpose across the great diversity of our membership is the heart of Phi Kappa Phi. It’s what makes us a vibrant community. There are many ways to connect with Phi Kappa Phi’s community, and I invite you to stay in touch. An important source of engagement is your local chapter, which can always use your help. I’m routinely heartened by the many volunteers who gather at the chapter level and do great things to improve their campuses, cities, and regions. At a time when civic life can seem particularly challenged by various pressures, Phi Kappa Phi’s spirit of service continues to inspire others with new possibilities.

Another important venue for connection is Forum, our award-winning magazine, as well as our website, phikappaphi.org, and our Link community, where members exchange ideas, advice, and lively stories. It’s available to all active members at Link.PhiKappaPhi.org.

Phi Kappa Phi’s fantastic tradition of learning and service has been sustained for more than 125 years by the consistent generosity of our financial donors. You can explore the many ways that you can help support this next generation of scholars and leaders at PhiKappaPhi.org/giving.

Here’s wishing everyone a great summer. As always, should you have any ideas and suggestions regarding Phi Kappa Phi, please feel free to reach me at bnewcomer@phikappaphi.org.
