With a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from the University of Montana and years of distinction in the pharmaceutical industry, Patrick Barney has enjoyed success in the STEM field, which encompasses science, technology, engineering, and math. He was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at Youngstown State University while pursuing an MBA and holds Six Sigma Green Belt and Project Management Professional certifications.

These days, as an active mentor, Patrick is working to help prospective new professionals thrive as much as he has. Patrick has roots in Kansas City, Missouri, but now lives and works in Colorado as a production manager at Corden Pharma in Boulder. For the past three years, he’s volunteered with Colorado PTECH, a collaboration among educators and industry professionals to help mentor and prepare high school students for jobs in STEM.

Let’s get to know Patrick!

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
Phi Kappa Phi is significant to me as it represents a community of scholars committed to academic excellence, integrity, and lifelong learning. It provides opportunities for personal and professional growth, fosters connections with like-minded individuals, and celebrates the pursuit of knowledge and scholarship. Being a member of Phi Kappa Phi instills in me a sense of pride and belonging, as I am part of a distinguished organization that values intellectual curiosity and the advancement of education.

What interests you most about chemistry?
The influence of chemistry reaches well beyond the confines of the laboratory, shaping countless facets of our daily lives and the world at large. Its real-world applications are extensive and profound, from pharmaceuticals and environmental sciences to material sciences and even food chemistry.

What do you enjoy most about your current position at Corden Pharma?
I find fulfillment in the daily challenges inherent in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Each day presents unique obstacles, fostering a continuous learning experience. Yet, what truly motivates me is the awareness that my efforts directly impact patients' lives. Witnessing our products on store shelves or featured in commercials reassures me that the work I contribute is genuinely meaningful.

What do you enjoy most about managing a team?
Leading a team is akin to solving a puzzle. I take pleasure in understanding my team members' strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. Witnessing a team member succeed in an area I've assisted them in developing is immensely gratifying.

What is your favorite sport?
Ice hockey is my favorite sport to watch and play. I discovered hockey during graduate school, and it quickly became a passion I couldn't shake. You'll always find me rooting for the Saint Louis Blues hockey club.

What are your hobbies?
I thrive in outdoor settings. During the warmer months, you'll often find me mountain biking in the nearby Front Range mountains or hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Fly fishing is another activity I consider essential to my outdoor adventures.

What’s the best surprise you’ve ever received?
