Yearning for exposure, Elias Johnson traveled to Cambridge University in England to make connections with a network of like-minded students and faculty members who see climate issues as central to our world today.

Majoring in biodiversity and conservation, Johnson, the 2023 Larry Sommers Study Abroad Grant recipient from Brigham Young University, journeyed to Cambridge University in England to focus on sustainability and ways to address systemic challenges of worldwide exploitation, consumption, and consumerism that are driving what he considers the most pressing problems of his generation.

Elias has set his sights on broadening his worldview and committing himself to doing everything he can to become a global leader in climate change. In his own words, “Going to Cambridge at this point in my academic training will be incredibly formative to my education.”

As part of the application process, applicants are asked to provide two letters of recommendation. To say that Elias came highly recommended would be an understatement. As one reference put it, “Students who take charge of their own education the way Eli has are rare.”

Students looking to learn abroad and immerse themselves in cultures other than their own often find funding their trips a challenge. Johnson’s tenacity and exceptional leadership on and off campus enabled him to craft an exceptional application and secure a 2023 Study Abroad Grant. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is thrilled to support Johnson’s quest for knowledge and global connectedness.

Phi Kappa Phi is currently accepting applications for its Study Abroad Grants. One-hundred and twenty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Will you be the next recipient? The deadline to apply is March. 15. Learn more at www.phikappaphi.org/studyabroad.
