Study Abroad Grants—Instructions and Deadlines

Eligibility

The competition is open to Phi Kappa Phi members and non-members in all fields of study who meet the following requirements:

  • Attend an institution with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter;
  • Have a minimum of 30 credit hours (or equivalent) but no more than 90 credit hours (or equivalent) by the deadline, including all AP, credit by exam, transfer credits, etc.;
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale;
  • Have at least two semesters (or equivalent) remaining in residence at their home institution after completing the study abroad experience;
  • The study abroad program must be taken between May 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009;
  • Must have been accepted into a study abroad program (provide the letter of acceptance on an official letterhead as part of your application);
  • Your study abroad plan should relate directly to your academic preparation, potential career choice, and commitment to the welfare of others.

Preparation of the Application

  • Applications and letters of recommendation must be typed. Prepare all documents in 11 or 12 point font size.
  • Please answer each item on the application in the space allowed. Do not add supplemental sheets other than the required transcripts, letter of acceptance into the program, and letters of recommendation.
  • In your “Personal Statement,” clearly (a) identify the goals you plan to accomplish if you are awarded a study abroad grant and (b) address the other topics indicated.
  • The letter of acceptance into an accredited study abroad program must be on organizational letterhead and signed by an official associated with the program.
  • Please assemble the original documents into the following order: Application Form (including the “Personal Statement”), Transcript/s in sealed envelopes, Letter of Acceptance into the study abroad program, and the Letters of Recommendation in sealed envelopes.
  • The application and supporting documents, except Letters of Recommendation and Transcript(s), must be submitted by the deadline date. You should retain a complete copy for your records as well; materials will not be returned. Letters of Recommendation and Transcript(s) remain in sealed envelopes.
  • Complete the Applicant’s Checklist-- read and sign the Applicant’s Certification, which indicates that you understand and accept the conditions under which the grant is awarded.

Deadline and Notification

The complete application and supporting documents must arrive at Phi Kappa Phi Society Headquarters on or before February 18, 2008. Materials arriving after the due date will not be considered.

Winners will be announced at the end of April 2008.

If Selected to Receive a Phi Kappa Phi Grant

Recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant will be required to:

  • Provide an original color photo and brief biographical description for publicity purposes, which may include, but is not be limited to, press releases, advertisements, Phi Kappa Phi publications both print and electronic, and any other venues used to promote and educate about The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and/or its awards programs.
  • Pursue the proposed study abroad project outlined in the application, unless prior approval of changes in plans is secured from Society Headquarters.
  • Submit, on time, any reports required by Phi Kappa Phi and notify Society Headquarters of any circumstances that may alter your status during the time of the study abroad period.
  • Use the grant to defray actual expenses (ie, travel, lodging, food, etc.) related to the study abroad program.
  • At the completion of the study abroad period, submit a summary report of accomplishment (approximately 350 words) to Society Headquarters within 45 days of your return.
  • Disbursement of award will begin July 2008.
