Global Migration
To set the story of migration to America within its larger, global context, a dynamic, radiant globe illustrates migration patterns throughout human history in The Peopling of America® Center.
Before Ellis Island
In The Peopling of America® Center, visitors travel through an exhibit on the history of migration to the United States from the colonial era to the opening of the Ellis Island Immigration Station in 1892. Using a theme familiar to visitors — a journey — the exhibits evoke a sense of movement, of uprooting lives, change, struggle, confrontation, community building, and adaptation.
Interpretive graphics and poignant audio selections communicate the story of “The Journey: Before Ellis Island” in The Peopling of America® Center. While the content varies greatly in each of the five journey segments, a number of common exhibit elements appear in each segment.
New Eras of Immigration
“The Journey: New Eras of Immigration” reflects the rapid pace of technological progress that characterizes migration and communication since World War II. This exhibit area in The Peopling of America® Center makes greater use of dynamic media and computer-enhanced interactive exhibits.
Interpretive graphics, videos, and interactive media programs communicate the story of “The Journey: New Eras of Immigration.” While the content varies greatly in each of the five journey segments, a number of common exhibit elements appear in each segment.
Citizenship Gallery
The Citizenship Gallery in The Peopling of America® Center looks at the process of becoming a citizen of the United States and what it means to be an American citizen.
