Truman State University Book Drive
Truman State University Chapter 259 held a fall book drive in conjunction with the Communication Disorders Association (CoDA). The book drive was organized by Phi Kappa Phi member Janet Gooch to support their Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant.
A portion of the grant funds were used to create a lending library for the Truman Speech and Hearing Clinic. The clinic provides speech, language, and hearing screenings and treatment services at no cost to its clients. Because of their location in rural north central Missouri, the clinic serves clients who come from as much as 100 miles away.
Phi Kappa Phi members brought over seventy-five books to the Fall Gathering to give a jumpstart to the drive. The book drive officially kicked off during Parents' Weekend. Members of Phi Kappa Phi and CoDA created eleven colorful donation boxes for placement around campus. Throughout the drive, faculty members kept an eye on the donation boxes in their areas and student members picked up and transported the books. They also involved the community by visiting with the Kirksville Kiwanis who donated over thirty-five brand new books. In addition, the lower and upper elementary schools in Kirksville were invited to bring books during the community trick-or-treating event held at the university.
Ray Miller Elementary School collected over 150 books during their fall book fair. The drive kept Phi Kappa Phi and CoDA member Lauren Caffey busy sorting books and creating an electronic database. When it was done, they had collected over 1,400 books for the clinic!
