Phi Kappa Phi is a nonprofit (501-C-3) organization dedicated to the recognition and promotion of academic excellence in all fields of higher education. Phi Kappa Phi takes seriously its members’ privacy and is strongly committed to protecting their privacy . Since certain types of information about its members are gathered upon registration and/or use of the website, www.phikappaphi.org, Phi Kappa Phi wants to help its members understand the terms and conditions surrounding the collection and use of that information.
This Privacy Statement and Notice Policy covers: (1) what types of information Phi Kappa Phi collects from its members upon registration and/or upon visiting www.phikappaphi.org, (2) how the information is used as approved by the Board of Directors and consistent with the Society's mission, and (3) under what conditions the information is disclosed to others. Unless declared otherwise by using the “Opt-Out Option”, one’s registration for membership constitutes agreement and knowledge of all terms and conditions set forth in this Privacy Statement and Notice Policy.
This Privacy Statement and Notice Policy was last changed and/or updated on July 25th, 2002. Phi Kappa Phi and www.phikappaphi.org reserve the rights to modify or amend this statement and policy at any time by mailing its members an updated version and/or by posting the revised policy online. Such changes will only affect the information collected after the effective date of the change unless expressly declared otherwise by Phi Kappa Phi.
If Phi Kappa Phi decides to change its Privacy Statement and Notice Policy, changes will be mailed and/or posted online to alert members of what information may be collected and/or shared with third parties.
1 The Types of Information Collected
When one submits a written application to Phi Kappa Phi, information such as one’s name, address, birth date, gender, zip code, occupation, and personal interests are obtained. Once a member of Phi Kappa Phi, this information, and any other type which is voluntarily given, is in no way anonymous to Phi Kappa Phi. Additionally, Phi Kappa Phi collects personal identifiable information from its members when provided by its members, for instance, in response to a written request for products or services sponsored by Phi Kappa Phi.
In general, www.phikappaphi.org automatically collects certain information such as the number and frequency of its visitors, along with what specific areas of the site are used.
Additionally, Internet browsers have features called “Cookies” which store small amounts of information from a user’s computer. “Cookies” may be required to be turned on to visit most websites, and may be required to access certain areas of www.phikappaphi.org. However, “Cookies” tell Phi Kappa Phi nothing about the user and are not considered personal identifiable information, unless the user provides personal identifiable information.
Lastly, Phi Kappa Phi electronically collects personal identifiable information from its members when provided. For example, information such as user name, address, email address, gender, birth date, zip code, occupation, and personal interests may be required for electronic activation of membership, or for electronic purchases of sponsored products.
2. How the Information is Used by Phi Kappa Phi
Personal identifiable information may be used by Phi Kappa Phi and/or shared with Third Parties. However, the use and sharing of this information by Phi Kappa Phi can be restricted by use of the “Opt-Out Option”of the application and/or by visiting www.phikappaphi.org. Unless declared otherwise by using the “Opt-Out Option”, one’s membership in Phi Kappa Phi constitutes agreement and knowledge of all terms and conditions set forth in this Privacy Statement and Notice Policy.
Data which is automatically collected from the general use of www.phikappaphi.org helps Phi Kappa Phi to determine and update what areas are of a strong interest to its members. The identity of the user of this information remains anonymous to Phi Kappa Phi and is only used for these general data calculations.
3. Disclosure and Sharing of the Information with Others
Phi Kappa Phi may share a member’s personal identifiable information collected unless specifically declared otherwise by activating the “Opt-Out Option” on one’s application and/or on the “Account” link on www.phikappaphi.org. Failure to activate the “Opt-Out Option” constitutes consent to the usage and/or sharing of personal identifiable information. Sharing of this information may result as follows:
Phi Kappa Phi works with certain companies, who in conjunction with their own programs, require disclosure of personal identifiable information. Phi Kappa Phi will only share personal identifiable information which it reasonably believes will provide services that Phi Kappa Phi members will be of interest. These companies may be provided personal identifiable information unless Phi Kappa Phi members specifically declare otherwise by use of the “Opt-Out Option”.
Any credit card transactions required for either manual or electronic registration and/or purchasing of items on www.phikappaphi.org are handled by a third party financial institution. This institution receives all personal identifiable information, along with the given credit card number, only to confirm the validity of the credit card numbers and process the transaction.
For certain request such as purchases, newsletters, or written responses, Phi Kappa Phi may provide service providers with personal identifiable information. Information used for these transactions will only be used for mailing and/or shipping purposes.
A member of Phi Kappa Phi can opt-out from Phi Kappa Phi’s use of information collected upon registration by visiting the Phi Kappa Phi Secure Web site at https://www.phikappaphi.org and updating your member profile (by clicking on your name or member number). There are check boxes at the bottom of the member profile form that allow you to "Opt-Out". A member may activate the “Opt-Out Option” either by written request or electronically, and prevent Phi Kappa Phi from using and/or sharing of specific information.
