Potential topics for scholarly articles include Japanese tea ceremonies; college athlete graduation rates; the end of the American influence; social Darwinism versus individual choice; institutionalization of mentally disabled children.

One original, previously unpublished poem will be selected to appear in the print version of the magazine as a complement to the scholarly articles and columns. The winning poet receives five free copies of the edition. The winner’s photo and a short biography also will appear with the poem. Runners-up may be chosen for online.

The poetry contest is open only to active Society members, published or unpublished. Previous winners must wait one year — three consecutive main editions to enter again. This restriction does not apply to previous runners-up; they do not have to wait to submit again.

Submissions one per entrant per issue should be up to 40 lines long and must reflect the theme of the edition: “Making the Grade.”

Send your poem as a Word attachment or as a cut-and-paste in the body of an email. Also include a short bio (three or four sentences), contact information (mailing address and work, home and cell phone numbers), and Phi Kappa Phi member number and chapter affiliation. Selected poets will be contacted for photos and other information.

Entry deadline is midnight, is midnight, June 3, only by email to poetry@phikappaphi.org. Poet, Berry College professor and Phi Kappa Phi member Sandra Meek serves as the poetry editor and judge in consultation with Society management.
