Phi Kappa Phi today announced the recipients of its 2018-2020 Phi Kappa Phi Artist, Phi Kappa Phi Scholar, and Sylvester Distinguished Service Awards.

Dr. David Briscoe, professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, was named as the 2018-2020 recipient of the Ray Sylvester Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Briscoe received the award for his outstanding dedication to service extending beyond academia. A certified family life educator and marriage and family sociologist, Dr. Briscoe’s professional and academic career spans more than 25 years. In addition to his leadership and achievement as a scholar, he has made a substantial impact through volunteer service to the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years in several roles spanning all levels of the organization including district, council, area, regional, national and international. Barbara Duval, professor in the Department of Studio Art at College of Charleston, was named the 2018-2020 Phi Kappa Phi Artist. Duval received the award for her career accomplishments as a professor, painter and printmaker, and campus leader. Duval’s career as an artist and scholar spans 40 years. During this time, her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally in Japan, Belgium, Dominican Republic and Argentina. Her work is also included in several public and private collections including The Fogg Art Museum, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art and Culture Center in Osaka, Japan. Dr. Morton Ann Gernsbacher, Vilas Research Professor and Sir Frederic C. Bartlett Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, was named the 2018-2020 Phi Kappa Phi Scholar. Dr. Gernsbacher received the award for her achievements in research, teaching, service and leadership. An esteemed researcher and professor of more than 30 years, Dr. Gernsbacher has been recognized nationally and internationally for her achievements in the field of cognitive neuroscience of human communication. Her extensive research focuses on typical and atypical attention and communication, including the condition of autism, using both behavioral and brain imaging methodologies.
