Shipping Container on SDSU Campus

A large shipping container sits on the campus of San Diego State University (SDSU) waiting to be filled with books, clothes, art supplies, school supplies, educational toys and sporting goods. In a few months, a group of 26 SDSU students and faculty who are part of The Mnyakongo School Library Project will travel to Kongwa, Tanzania to deliver the shipping container and assist in the construction and installation of a school library in this economically depressed region.

An ambitious international service learning project originally created by Professor Peter Larlham, these efforts to help school children are supported by several campus organizations including The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Scholars Without Borders, and the SDSU Department of Theatre, Television and Film, who are donating all ticket proceeds from their performance of "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" on May 1, 2010. Homecoming King Rex Brown and Homecoming Queen Tess Banko raised money to purchase the shipping container and are working to fill it with valuable resources for children in Kongwa, Tanzania. They are holding a book drive from February 22-26, 2010, as part of their student service project.
