Spring Break Stories
Phi Kappa Phi Forum seeks member stories and photos about spring break for possible inclusion in a potential member-generated piece for the spring 2010 edition, whose theme is “spring is in the air.”
Tentative topics for scholarly articles and columns include the annual spring return of cliff swallows; the benefits of spring flowers and the threats to these plants; the impact that key men’s and women’s “March Madness” NCAA basketball games has on sports as well as on society; canonical literature related to spring; to what degree spring allergies are a pharmaceutical invention.
Member contributions about spring break can be light-hearted (but need to be tasteful) or serious. For instance, maybe you drove across the country on a mission such as playing in a beach volleyball tournament. Perhaps you spent spring break volunteering or serving the greater good. Some students work during spring break. Others study. It’s possible that geopolitics impacted things: where you went (or didn’t go) because of the state of the world. Whether you’re a student, former student, parent of a student, college professor or university administrator, you might recommend some dos and don’ts. And families take spring break, too, not merely students. Or entries can be as simple as: where did you go, why, and what travel tips do you have?
Entries will be accepted only by email to Editor Peter Szatmary and must arrive no later than 7 a.m. CST Monday, December 7, 2009.
Length: up to 250 words. Photos: at least 500 kb and 300 dpi and sent as attachments, color photos preferred. Include your member number, chapter affiliation, contact information (cell, home and work phone numbers) and a short bio (for instance, what you do/did for a living or where you go/went to school). Selected contributors will be notified and may be asked for additional information.
Poetry Contest
Phi Kappa Phi Forum also seeks original, previously unpublished poetry from active members for its spring 2010 edition.
The winning poet receives five free copies of the edition. The winner’s photo and a short biography also will appear along with the poem. Runners-up may be chosen to appear online. The contest is open only to active Phi Kappa Phi members, published or unpublished. The poetry must reflect the theme of the issue: spring is in the air.
Poems should be up to 40 lines long. One poem per entrant per edition, please. Send your poem as a Word attachment or as a cut-and-paste in the body of the email. Also include a short bio (three or four sentences including Web links), contact information (mailing address and work, home and cell phone numbers) and Phi Kappa Phi member number and school affiliation as a separate Word attachment or as a cut-and-paste underneath the poem in the body of the email. Selected poets will be contacted for photos and other information.
The deadline to submit material is 7 a.m. CST Monday, December 7, 2009. Poet, Berry College professor and Phi Kappa Phi member Sandra Meek serves as the poetry editor and judge in consultation with Society management. Entries will be accepted only by email at poetry@phikappaphi.org.
