Student Leadership Conference Welcomes Top Scholars

Monday, February 09, 2009

BATON ROUGE, LA— The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi conducted its inaugural Student Leadership Conference at the end of January, with thirteen chapters from across the United States sending student vice presidents to Society headquarters in Baton Rouge. During the conference, students learned valuable leadership skills and provided the framework for future student involvement in Phi Kappa Phi. These outstanding campus leaders will also serve as a student advisory panel and as liaisons to the Society’s Board of Directors.

Louisiana first lady Supriya Jindal opened the conference with a video message for all of the attendees, welcoming each by name. Attendee Alyx Mark said the personalized video was “very special to all of us.” Sponsored in conjunction with Barnes&Noble.com, Avis Budget Group, and Enterprise Rent-a-Car, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Student Leadership Conference featured guest speakers, leadership training and a valuable opportunity for these thirteen university student vice presidents to determine how better to engage the community of scholars on their campuses and beyond.

In addition to intensive training, Student Leadership Conference participants laid the groundwork for the Council of Students. Beginning in 2010, the Council of Students will be the first formal representation university students have on the Society’s Governing Board of Directors. Perry Snyder, Phi Kappa Phi’s Executive Director, said, “We want to make the Society still more responsive for our student members, and it would not be possible without the willing efforts of leaders like these.” Students left the weekend conference empowered, engaged and prepared to expand Phi Kappa Phi’s reputation and good work on campuses all over the United States.
