Phi Kappa Phi Forum seeks original, previously unpublished poetry from active Society members for its spring 2011 edition that will be devoted to the theme of “empathy.”
Potential topics for scholarly articles and columns include the neuroscience of empathy; why empathy is central to morality; teenaged bullying; dolphin-assisted therapeutic practices; the “Christmas Truce” in World War I; and sympathetic yawning.
One original, previously unpublished poem will be selected to appear in the print version of the magazine as a complement to the scholarly articles and columns. The winning poet receives five free copies of the edition. The winner’s photo and a short biography also will appear along with the poem. Runners-up may be chosen for online.
The poetry contest is open only to active Society members, published or unpublished. Submissions — one per entrant per issue — should be up to 40 lines long and must reflect the theme of the edition: “empathy.”
Send your poem as a Word attachment or as a cut-and-paste in the body of an email. Also include a short bio (three or four sentences), contact information (mailing address and work, home and cell phone numbers), and Phi Kappa Phi member number and chapter affiliation. Selected poets will be contacted for photos and other information.
Entry deadline is midnight, Dec. 5, only by email at poetry@phikappaphi.org. Poet, Berry College professor and Phi Kappa Phi member Sandra Meek serves as the poetry editor and judge in consultation with Society management.
