2005 Award of Excellence Recipient

Stefanie Lockwood became a full-time student of psychology at The University of Massachusetts Amherst following ten years of accounting education, which included both on-the-job training and community college coursework. Although she enjoyed considerable success as an accountant, her passion for psychology never faded.

As an undergraduate at The University of Massachusetts Amherst, Stefanie carried a more-than-fulltime course load and maintained a 4.0 grade point average while working 30 hours a week as a financial analyst for the University. She also was awarded an honors research grant to conduct an original research project on dual representation in young children and worked as a research assistant in the infant cognition laboratory, assisting with the design and research on arithmetic and object permanence in 5 1/2 month-old children.

Thanks in part to a Phi Kappa Phi Award of Excellence, Stefanie is continuing to pursue her passion for psychology at the graduate level, researching at-risk populations and interventions to improve family and community mental health and well-being.

"The Award of Excellence I received has been both a rèsumè and graduate school application booster, and I was able to use the monetary award to pay for my school books and a portion of my tuition fees as well," said Stefanie.

Stefanie plans to dedicate her life's work to helping children in their cognitive and psychological development, as well as teaching them to adapt to various developmental disabilities and recover from environmental neglect and abuse.
