Since the first episode of "Doogie Howser, MD" aired in 1989, Steven Heffner knew he wanted to be a doctor. In elementary and middle school, he fueled his career interest through books and computer research. As a high school student, Steven volunteered at local hospitals where he shadowed doctors, nurses, and technicians and was mentored by a general surgeon.

Steven's volunteer activities and training continued into college. His work at a free medical clinic taught him how to communicate effectively with patients, accurately assess their responsiveness, and adopt the necessary demeanor and approach. Thanks to this experience, Steven says that patient interviews are now one of his favorite assignments.

"Having just begun my first year in medical school, the Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship award has been a godsend in helping me meet the costs of books and medical equipment, including my first stethoscope," said Steven.

Steven remains open-minded about what field of medicine he would like to practice, although the "instant cure" aspect of surgery particularly appeals to him. Steven suspects that he will make a final decision once he has an opportunity to explore through rotations the different specialties available.
