Dr. William A. Bloodworth, Jr., served as president of Augusta State University for 19 years. During his tenure, he oversaw more than $95 million in new construction, the addition of student housing, record enrollment, and a change from being a senior college to a state university. He has been instrumental in the growth and visibility of the university's chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, which now sponsors an annual Phi Kappa Phi Student Research and Fine Arts Conference.

Bloodworth has been a member of Phi Kappa Phi’s board of directors since 2007, serving as president-elect and president. During his term as president, for the first time, students and at-large members served on the board of directors, the Society began work on a national service initiative and the membership increased by seven percent to a level not seen since 2002. Bloodworth will continue to serve the Society as past president during the 2012-2014 biennium.

Bloodworth was elected to Phi Kappa Phi membership by the East Carolina University chapter in 1986, and he served on the national Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Committee from 1991 to 1997. He was the keynote speaker at the Society's 2004 triennial convention. He is the author of two books, Max Brand and Upton Sinclair, and numerous articles on American literature, including the literature of the American West and the literature of Native Americans.

He earned a bachelor’s in English and education from Texas Lutheran University, a master’s in English from Lamar University and a Ph.D. in American civilization from The University of Texas at Austin. He also attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
