Dr. Rick Shale is a professor in the department of English at Youngstown State University. Shale has been at YSU since 1976 and a full-time faculty member in the university’s department of English since 1979. His area of expertise is film study.

Inducted into Phi Kappa Phi in 1980 at YSU, Shale serves on the Society’s national board as vice president for chapter relations. In this capacity he will chair the Chapter Relations Committee and oversee the Council of Students. Additionally, he will help coordinate the investigation of institutions where new chapters are sought, recommend the establishment of new chapters and encourage the development of present chapters.

Shale has served two consecutive terms on the national board as a regional vice president before taking his current role. As regional vice president, he worked to strengthen chapters in the north central region and represented the interests of all chapters on the Society’s board. Shale also has served on both the Society’s Nominating and Marketing and Member Benefits committees.

Shale holds a bachelor’s in humanities from Ohio Wesleyan University and both his master’s degree and Ph.D. in American culture from the University of Michigan.
